Follow the chords

Jam shows the chords it detects in a row above the parts and in a chord grid laid out by bar and beat. Choose Guitar or Piano as your instrument to see a diagram for each chord.

How Jam finds chords

Jam listens to the recording and names the chord at each point, placed on the beat it detected. It’s an automatic transcription: read it as a strong first draft, not a published chart (when Jam gets it wrong).

The chord row

Above the parts, each chord is a block on the timeline. Select a block to jump there.

The chord grid

The grid shows the song bar by bar, one square per beat. Select a square to jump to that beat.

  • An opening partial bar is labelled Pickup.
  • A chord that arrives just before the beat is marked as coming early.

On a computer, choose Show in main view on the Chords card. On a phone, choose Chords in the footer.

Chord diagrams

Choose your instrument with Instrument:

  • Guitar shows a fingering diagram for each chord. Use the arrows to see other voicings.
  • Piano shows the chord on a keyboard and on a staff.

When you change the key, every chord name and diagram moves with it.

For any chord on its own, the chord book in the Toolkit shows shapes and how it’s built.

When there are no chords

  • Transcribing chords…: Jam is still working on them.
  • Chords could not be transcribed.: the transcription failed. The rest of the song still works, and you can’t retry it yourself yet (lyrics or chords missing).
  • Chord diagrams appear once this song’s chords are identified.: the diagrams show as soon as the chords are ready.
